Race Rocks offers a unique, limited access experience to connect with nature as a maintained lighthouse for more than 170 years and a protected ecological reserve for more than 50 years.
Race Rocks Ecological Reserve is the most southerly point in British Columbia and home to migratory birds, elephant seals, sea lions and other marine creatures. The area was designated an ecological reserve as a result of advocacy work done by teachers and students at Pearson College.
Nick Townley, is one of the EcoGuardians who keeps up the tradition of the lighthouse keepers gone before him, keeping logs of the maritime and wildlife movements on and around the island - including counting each and every sea lion that might be dozing on the rocks on any given day. The island has allowed him to centre himself, be immersed in the tranquility of the interconnectedness of land, sea, sky and his presence.
